I think I’ve accidentally created neighborhood-level drama… over potatoes. So there’s this vegetable seller near my house. I buy from him regularly. He’s friendly, helpful, remembers what I usually take… basically we have an unspoken customer–seller understanding. Then recently, this old lady from the neighborhood started going door to door selling vegetables from her field. Very sweet...also very hard to say no since we greet each other every day. Now my regular veg guy is clearly not thrilled about this, especially because she’s also selling potatoes. He even mentioned it, and I, like a responsible citizen, assured him: “Don’t worry, I’ll mostly buy potatoes from you.” Cut to today: Old lady shows up. Smiling. Holding potatoes and asked if we want to buy. Me: …okay fine. And obviously, at that exact moment, my regular veg seller SEES me buying potatoes from her. The look he gave me… I have never felt more like I cheated in a relationship that had no formal agreement as I had assured him earlier. I kind of feel awkward and guilty too. Now with my bag of illegal potatoes stored inside my home, I am questioning my ethics. Am I a disloyal customer? A soft-hearted neighbor? Or just someone who cannot handle direct eye contact and says yes to everyone? (Anticipating humorous responses)
